I was about to write "Last century?" because I thought that US Debt was

close to 0 in the early 80's, but you're essentially right. It's been there since the Civil War and jumped big in WW2 of course. But it was on a downward course until 1979/1980, at which point it started a pretty continual upward trend (dropping a little late Clinton).
