When all wrestlers were given a chance at an NCAA title

In the Schalles Award information a couple of days ago it was noted that Wade Schalles won 2 college Division and 2 D-1 national championships. That fact produced the following..

From 1928 to 1962, there was only one NCAA Division (and tournament) for all colleges and universities.. In 1963, the NCAA Tournament separated into Division I and College Division. From 1963 to 1965, the top four wrestlers per weight class in the NCAA College Division were considered NCAA College Division All Americans and this All American Status also acted as a Qualification to the NCAA Division I tournament. From 1966 through 1973, the top six were awarded All American honors but only the top four qualified for the NCAA Division I tournament.  In 1974, the NCAA College Division separated into two different divisions, D-II and D-III. However, D-II/D-III wrestlers continued to participate (sporadically) in the NCAA D-1  tournament until the early 1990's.
