I know of one instance that probably helped the cause

Was driving about 10 years ago east on Route 56, going up Blue Ridge Mountains between village of Vesuvius and Blue Ridge Parkway. Very twisty road. Met not one, but TWO 18-wheelers that were coming down the mountain (I assume routed that way by GPS as a shortcut between Route 29 and I-81). They had both gotten to a hairpin turn and were stuck--couldn't go up or down the mountain. I had to back up until I could turn around and take 30-mile detour to get to Wintergreen. Now there is a "GPS Routing Not Advised" sign at both ends of Route 56.
