I had the same thought, but am of a different mindset in the path forward.
I don't think VT can achieve that level of play without compromising some of the tenets I believe the program still tries to uphold (for instance, not having former players hand out $100 to current players on the field after a game). So at this point, I'd rather see VT try to honor the players and the coaches who remain, particularly those who recently uprooted their lives and families to be a part of the Tech program. If that means hiring someone from within or already close to the program, so be it. I don't think hiring an entirely new staff at this point of the calendar is going to be possible, so I say just find someone to man the helm at least for the short-term and try to galvanize the players and coaches already on staff and move forward in the best was possible. If Fuente leaves like this, he's really screwing VT, but I don't want VT to in turn have to screw the guys who just committed to coaching there. Even if that means the team is down for a few years. Give me people who want to be there and I think good things can happen. That's the reason I never followed Buzz Williams' teams and the reason I was so happy about the Mike Young hire, and seems to be working out OK so far.
