Dropping two atomic bombs sucked, but we had just seen what happened when we invaded Okinawa. Not only did the Japanese military fight to the last man, the majority of civilians killed themselves to avoid being captured by the Americans. Many threw themselves off cliffs.

That gave us clear insight about what would happen once we started invading the main island. You can bet there would have been 1,000X+ more Japanese casualties than happened with the two atomic bombs. Heck, maybe 10,000X more causalities. It was a no-win situation, but the world couldn't continue with that regime.
