Winning your conference is essential because it is the quarter final of the play off system. Typically, but not always, the winner of the conference championship is the highest ranked team from that conference. I used this years example and it is that way. It is most years. Occasionally, a lesser ranked team wins the conference but it is rare. In that case, the At Large slot is likely to go to that losing team from that conference championship.
