Anything out of the norm is interpreted at "Look at me, ain't I great!?"

Baseball is the ultimate team sport, so you're not supposed to draw attention to yourself like that. It's also interpreted as showing up the pitcher who just gave up the homer, because you're drawing even more attention to you (with him being the B side of the play).

Not saying I agree with all that -- in fact, it was great being STL in this playoffs because they like to think of themselves as the main arbiter of the unwritten rules. But carrying the bat to first base is definitely an anomaly.
