I’m like your friend. Can’t stand being down and out. I never ask for help nor want it and in fact refuse it when offered. If I can’t do it on my own then I have failed. I have few close friends. Trust me he knows what you are doing and feels it. He will bark and seem exasperated with you but deep down knows he needs help.

It’s not ego. It’s fear. Fear that he needs others and can’t do it by himself and he is weak. Keep doing what you are doing. Whether he says it or not he is grateful.
