China can play the long game due to their structure

Their president can stay in power for as long as he wants so the pressure is not on him. And they can shift purchasing of goods to other supplier countries if needed.

To me this signals that they are now dug in and willing to wait until the next US election to see how it shakes out. Another 18 months of trade war for them is easier in their state controlled economy.
