decided to give automatic bids to the NIT for regular season champs that don't qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Hence why I am curious to know if VT would ever consider participating in the CBI. FWIW here is a list of teams that participated in the CBI (16 team field) and had a losing record.

It is worth noting that Oregon State had a losing record one year and ended up winning the entire tournament. Since the Finals is best of 3, I believe Oregon State either finished with a .500% record or 1/2 games above .500% that year.
