I agree with you it is hard to qualify for the NIT now that the NCAA
decided to give automatic bids to the NIT for regular season champs that don't qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Hence why I am curious to know if VT would ever consider participating in the CBI. FWIW here is a list of teams that participated in the CBI (16 team field) and had a losing record.
2019
CS-Northridge (13-20)
Coastal Carolina (15-16)
Longwood (15-17)
WVU (14-20)
2018
Miami (OH) (16-17)
New Orleans (15-16)
North Texas (15-17) - won the tournament
UT-Rio Grande Valley (15-17)
2017
Coastal Carolina (16-17) - lost to Wyoming in the championship series
Hampton (14-16
UIC (15-18)
Loyola (MD (15-16)
Utah Valley (15-16)
2016
Seattle (14-16)
UNC-Greensboro (14-18)
Western Carolina (16-17)
2015
Colorado (15-17)
2014
Old Dominion (16-17)
Penn State (15-17)
Siena (15-17) - won the tournament
It is worth noting that Oregon State had a losing record one year and ended up winning the entire tournament. Since the Finals is best of 3, I believe Oregon State either finished with a .500% record or 1/2 games above .500% that year. [Post edited by VTHokie2000 at 07/15/2019 12:06PM]
