Not sure about the CBI, but it's harder to make the NIT these days.
Regular season conference champions who lose in their conference tournaments are guaranteed an NIT spot. So for example, if Radford wins the Big South regular season title but gets bounced in the tournament, they get an automatic NIT spot. That and the fact that the field dropped from 40 to 32 means it is a lot harder to make these days. Texas made it in with 16 wins (and went on to win it), but these days you really need to get to 18 wins to be sure, IMO.
