How hard is it to learn how to true bicycle wheels?

I've viewed it more of an art or magic than a science...lol

Had my rear wheel rebuilt with all new spokes, then after 500-600 miles, had it trued again. I've probably put another 500-600 miles on it, and noticed it's way out of true again.

Not sure I want to keep paying a local bicycle shop to true this wheel every 500 miles, so I guess I better learn how to do it myself (& stay on top of it).
