I would hope they have better predictive metrics than just overall %

At the very least % of acceptance based on candidate quality and geography.

Example, if you offer 100 students who's credentials make them competitive in ivy league, you will get x and slightly impacted by geography because cost differences would be somewhat offset by scholarships).

If you offer 100 students who are competitive with major state schools (VT, UVa, NC, NCSU, etc) you will get Y (likely significantly higher than x and greatly impacted by geography because of cost and not much scholly money).

If you offer 100 students who are competitive with lower tier schools (JMU, Mason, ODU, etc) you will get Z ( again significantly higher than Y and at least as geographically impacted because of cost again).

If the admissions process were to offer larger numbers in the 3rd category, it likely would cause a huge increase in enrollments as a percentage of offers, especially if the shift came from the second group. Given the messaging coming from the school, specifically their announcements about this years applications consisting of more underrepresented applicants and first generation college students (who logically are more likely to be in the 3rd group), it seems logical that there was a higher acceptance rate.
