My interpretation of the key part (spoilers)


I tend to think the time travel segment was more important than for just this one movie. I think they specifically did that to setup the future set of movies and characters that will come in the next decade (now that Disney owns X-Men and Fantastic 4).

So we had Thanos that destroyed all of the stones even before the time travel.
And then we had the Ancient One that said our reality is held together by all the stones.

So I think almost the entire movie was in a fragmented reality. But that’s only assuming that Marvel wants all of the characters to be able to connect.
