The guys on Flowrestling Live Radio (Christian Pyles, Willie Saylor, Kyle Bratke and Dan Lobdell) briefly mentioned the Cody Brewer hire and called it a home run for what he can bring to a room. They also had some very positive comments about the Tech program overall. I jotted down these comments (almost exact quotes) from the three hosts:

Pyles: “I love this hire.”

Saylor: “It’s a home run hire.”

Pyles: “Virginia Tech is all-in on wrestling. It’s really important for them to do good. They’ve invested in Robie. They’ve invested in a lot of things for the program. They have a great facility.”

Saylor: “The salary he’s [Brewer] getting … I haven’t seen anything in writing … but it’s good. There’s more money being invested in coaching.”

Saylor: “Some guys are better coaches, they’re better working with the wrestlers, relating. Brewer’s got a bright future in coaching. He’s active. He gets guys better. What he did with Rivera was special.”

They also contrasted the favorable cost of living in Blacksburg with the higher cost in the Chicago burbs.

To some extent, they contrasted Tech being “all-in” with Northwestern (particularly the admin) being an example of a school that is not all-in on wrestling … although the NW coaches and wrestlers do a good job of keeping themselves relevant. But there are challenges.”

Also commented about the lack of activity on the Maryland head coaching position and said that they keep hearing that the money isn’t enough for the cost of living in DC. (I personally think there are a lot of other problems at MD as well, like an athletic dept that has made more than a few big blunders over the past decade, and wrestling, as a non-revenue sport, feels the hit for all the other errors.)
