This is a case of....
selective memory or "the older I get the better I was." VT did well in the state during the middle part of Beamer's tenure. The Vick, Houseright, Suggs crew was the first with larger numbers and Cornell and Kenny Oxendine were the ones that got the Top 10 ball rolling so to speak. The earlier and later years were more marginal in the Top 10 and while there were a couple of years with 4 it was not routinely 4-6 as you suggest. Things have changed, including conference affiliation, that makes it possible to cast a wider net now.
