You are assuming that his calls were recruiting calls. Maybe he felt that

he should tie up loose ends with players and parents with whom he had established close relationships. Like, maybe “I really appreciate that you entrusted your son with me, but I have an opportunity to return to my home state, so I am no longer the coach at Virginia Tech. Heading on down the dirt road, hard road, right road, i’m so confused. I’ll send you a T-shirt
