Smart Home

Anyone put smart "stuff" in their house? If so do you recommend Z-wave or Zigbee? How large of a house did you put it in?

I did not realize Z-wave and Zigbee were actual wireless protocols, thought these devices just ran over (or could) over wifi networks. Want to control a couple of lights, etc. remotely, nothing to fancy.
