Funny thing that. Social security and medicare aren't budget items


Those are considered non-discretionary spending by the Federal gov't. Congress couldn't cut those if they wanted to without initiating a separate Act Of Congress to repeal the previous Act that established those programs..

Unfortunately, 2/3 of all the money the government spends is classified as non-discretionary. Of the remaining 1/3, about 3/4 of what is left is defense spending.

The ONLY thing Congress could cut that would have any hope of making a difference is the military. Unfortunately, to balance the budget, dissolving the military entirely still wouldn't be enough. The DOD, the War on Terror, and everything else related to national security runs about $990B, but the deficit is $1.1T.

So when you get right down to it, the whole thing is hopeless. The only way to get this country economically solvent is to completely nuke all federal spending and start over from scratch. And that, unfortunately, won't win anyone an election.
