2) I don't think we're necessarily *supposed* to think that he faked it, but it's definitely a fun thing to consider. I think a cooler way to process it is that the ending basically paid off the narrative device of the season (Wayne's unreliable memory) by creating a scenario in which we, the audience, could find out what happened to the girl w/o jeopardizing the safety of the character. The implication throughout the season was that she would be in danger (from somebody) if she was found to be alive, so having ol' no-memory Wayne find her alive was the best way to convey her final status to the audience w/o putting the character in hypothetical danger. Pretty crafty, I thought.
