This used to get to me until I realized I was wrong.


Brilliant means shining, like a diamond if taken in literal sense. A figurative example would be how we describe an opportunity for someone to shine, or a person delivering a shining performance.

Even in context of applying it towards something or someone as being smart, it still means shining in a figurative way.

So, I suppose over time we have (inappropriately) associated the term brilliance with smarts, or at least jump to that assumption rather than consider the root of the usage.
