One answer - The TRoom
I prefer the original location downtown http://lynchburgvirginia.blogspot.com/2005/11/texas-inn-lynchburgs-most-famous.html but there's also one on the western side of the city on Cornerstone.
Sit at the bar (there are only seats at the bar), order a cheesy all the way and a small Coke and soak in some local color. Get a bowl with and a dog walkin' for a late night snack.
fancier choices:
downtown:
Shoemakers
Bootleggers
Depot Grille
Market on Main
cheap Mexican, multiple locations:
La Carreta
Andy Chang China Grill (Chinese) on western side of LB
Also, as you're coming into town on 29, the Briar Patch in Amherst is a favorite.
