Well, my very biased opinion is they are VERY good
Disclosure: I often wear orange and maroon glasses, BUT...
Last year's team finished 22-30 overall and 7-16 in the conference. IMHO, this year's team will blow both of those marks away.
This team seems to be playing at a high level. They are aggressive at the plate and the results show it - last year's team hit .241 for the season, which ranked 251st in the country. Last year we hit 35 home runs all year - this year's has already hit 27. They have also struck out just 50 times in 531 at bats - that's making contact. And they've already stolen 31 bases (in 35 attempts) - last year's team stole only 39.
The one-two punch in pitching has been outstanding. Most expected Carrie Eberle to be good, but Keeley Rochard has been amazing and having a really, really good second arm should be invaluable. Coach D'Amour has repeated sang the praises of Doug Gillis as a pitching coach and early returns certainly seem to back up those accolades. I sure would like to have that 3rd arm - and who knows - maybe one will appear.
Conference scheduling is also favorable this year - we do not play Florida State or Notre Dame so that will be a positive as the team continues to grow.
Yes, I am very excited. It's probably too early to talk about, but I really think an NCAA bid is in the cards this year and we could be a tough out (literally and figuratively). However, there is a lot of softball left to play before then, so let's take it one game at a time and enjoy the ride.
Let's Go Hokies.
