What I was told is Jones wanted to be the starting PG...
for the next 4 years but Mabrey already had won the job in October, causing Jones to sit on the bench more than she anticipated. Jones was a 4-star recruit who wanted to come in play right away. When being recruited, she thought Hicks would be the starting PG this season and that she would be the starting PG in her 3 remaining years. Maybe she thought Mabrey would end up being a SG, even though it was made known by Kenny Brooks that Mabrey and Jones would be fighting for the starting PG spot as true freshmen. Did Kenny promise Jones the starting PG spot while being recruited? I don't know but I doubt Kenny would ever promise a kid a starting spot unless they were a 5-star McDonald's All-American. Any way, it's no secret that Shaniya Jones was unhappy sitting on the bench. From reading Kenny Brooks' preseason comments, Mabrey received a lot of praise for her off-season preparation, her maturity, and her work ethic. I didn't read any such comments about Jones. Jones knew that her minutes would be cut playing behind Mabrey, thus she did the right thing (IMHO) by transferring after the fall semester to find a situation right for her. Kendyl wasn't a PG, so the talk of Kendyl taking her minutes is not founded in fact. Maybe Jones was annoyed that a player with lesser talents was receiving more minutes than her, but I don't have any proof backing up that claim. It's a bummer that Jones left because she is a talented player, maybe one of the 10 top recruits in Tech WBB history? Unfortunately, that won't be the last time this happens to our program or any other program. 4-star players want to play.
