How strong are plastic bags?...

I took one large reusable bag into Food Lion this morning. I noticed that the bag would not be enough, so told the cashier that it was okay to use plastic bags. She went on to put the six pack of Cokes (there is a handle on the side) in one bag, two cans of soup in another bag, a half gallon of milk in another bag and a package of chicken (not uncommon) in the last bag. Isn't the purpose of a bag to consolidate items for easier handling? I have encountered this many times where the cashier just loves to he how many bags they can use.
