This just includes NCAA teams (does not include NAIA or NJCAA)

There were 217 NCAA wrestling programs in 2009-10.
There are 241 NCAA programs after last season.

Division I had 146 members the first year the NCAA started tracking participation statistics, there were 276 Division I institutions that year (1981-82).

What this tells us is a few things
1. It's a complete myth when people make claims about there "being over 300 Division I teams back in the day." The "Division I" construct didn't really start until 1973 when we created Division II and Division III.
2. Division II and Division III have been growing incredibly over the past 15 years. In Division II, the low point was in 2002-03, when there were just 38 schools fielding wrestling programs out of the 282 D2 schools. That was just over 13%. In Division III, which is much more enrollment driven and has more private schools adding compared to state schools, the low point was 87 in 2011-12. Since then, we're now at 105 with a handful more coming on next year. The lowest percentage was in 2009-10 (19.7). Now we're at 22.5%.
3. The NAIA hasn't tracked its stats officially, but I have. The NAIA had 28 programs in 2007-08, now they're at 57, with more coming on next year. They have 251 schools currently.

At the end of last season, there were 298 four-year varsity wrestling opportunities (that doesn't count the non-affiliated schools in the USCAA, like a handful of the Penn State branch campuses).
