If Beale Street Could Talk

Oscar bait movies should be reviewed on a dual scale system. One scale is good vs bad. The other is entertaining vs not.

Beale St is a very good but not entertaining film. In fact it will leave you cold. It's a great example of how the story and direction can get you to care about characters. You care about them so much, though, you might end up angry at the end.
