Gear heads, OBD II code reader / diagnostic tool, who's researched these...

Had one of the camshaft position sensors go bad in my XTerra on way to inlaws over the weekend. FIL had a neat OBDII reader that connected to his iPad using wifi. Allowed me to diagnose which sensor was giving me trouble. Quick trip to auto parts store and about 30 minutes swapping the sensor and all was right with the world again.

The unit he had was about $20 bucks I was impressed with the data the app it connected to was able to provide. So, I'm thinking of picking up something similar. When looking online, these things run the gamut on price and functionality. I'm not looking to do any high tech tuning of our cars, more just plugging in and being able to determine if it's something simple I can fix or something major, but more than just telling me the code number and me having to then research what the code means.

So who has researched these, and what do you recommend?

Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas to all!
