Can't believe these answers all wrong.
First question should be peat or sweet? Does your FIL drink a lot of bourbons or whiskeys? If bourbon he will likely go for the sweeter and less peat. If the latter then will like the peatier and more sassier bottles.
The sweeter ones will be aged in sherry or carribean casks -- Balvenie 14 & 15. Glenfiddich 21 and I believe 18 is as well. GF 21 is one of my Favs but that is about $150 a bottle. I have heard Oban is pretty good and Glenmorangie is a great value. I never really got into the Macallans as they are peatier and overpriced IMO.
And if you are going to buy "scotch" single malt is the only answer.
