There can be some good deals on CL....

But make sure you’re getting something that is playable for you starting out. I’ve got a couple of nice Fender basses, but recently picked up a 5 string Ibanez for about $300 that does just what I need. I started playing guitar and then moved to bass so it wasn’t difficult at all for me.

I’ve been playing guitar and bass over 30 years and just started gigging again. There is an app if you have an iPad(I’m sure it’s available on other tablets/phones) I just love called Jam-Up. You can plug your instrument into your device and play along with your favorite songs. You can use either headphones or pump it through an amp with the right cables and annoy your family. It’s a blast and syncs to your music library. Tons of premodled amps and effects built in for free and you buy packs to expand. Really improved my electric guitar playing tremendously. I use it to warm up before gigs on bass.
