All you need is one loud talker to ruin it


On a more psychological level, yes it theoretically encourages communication and collaboration by "removing barriers between people". BUT, you are also taking away the personal space from people. As depressing as cubes can be, they at least give you a little bit of personal real estate where you can keep family pics, personal items, and favorite staplers. Taking that away is a negative for the individual.
