Assuming you have excellent credit and low utilization, look for 0% trans

fee, 0% interest rate and 15 - 18 month term. I found one with Chase last year.

I've had $$ unexpected expenses (dog hit by car, another dog with TWO TPLO surgeries...), rather than using cash savings, I look for a teaser option.

1) Set up auto debit to make $100 payment each month to the card. You can not screw this up!
2) If I borrow $10K, I'll save $1,000 each month for ten months and pay off the balance before the term is up. It's a little painful but a hell of a lot easier than draining $10K from savings. And I make piddly money on the interest.

My credit score took a 40 point hit down to 795. Not only did I open a new CC (ding one) but the utilization was also very tight (ding two). I could've asked for more $$ and immediately paid off the extra amount which wouldn't have had such an impact on the utilization piece.

It's all a game.

I don't suggest this if you're planning on a big purchase in the next year.
