USA Wrestling is the National Governing Body
... and they host a series of events across all age groups across the country. As the NGB, they set the protocols for selection to the teams that will compete at the World Championships under the international federation (in this case, United World Wrestling aka UWW). Each country has its own NGB to set the selection process.
In Mekhi's case, he entered the UWW Junior Nationals in Las Vegas. Placed high enough to qualify for the World Team Trials in Rochester, Minn., the next month, then won the tournament to earn the right to represent the U.S. at the Junior World Championships.
UWW Cadet World Team Trials/Nationals are held in Akron (along with the U23 as well).
Our senior-level athletes have similar situations to qualify and earn the spot. Just to clarify, no one is "selected" - you earn this spot by your own wrestling. It's like wrestling doesn't "name" All-Americans like basketball, which is voted on by media (AP), coaches and whoever wants to put out an All-America team. Same general concept applies here.
