Can someone explain the point of a wireless phone charger?

The wireless charger has it's own power cord/plug and needs to be plugged into a wall, correct? And the phone just sits on it right? Therefore if you want to use the phone you need to take it off the little pad, which stops it from charging? How is that more convenient then just plugging a standard charging cord into the phone?
