I'm not totally up to speed on the industry, but...
I've heard the newer (BMW) designs are better than their initial DI engine designs. Would say that's probably the same across the industry. That doesn't mean the problem has been completely corrected, but you probably get longer intervals before cleaning is required. I think their initial DI engines required cleaning at 30K mile intervals.
As for who still used port injection, suggest you pick the cars you like, then research their engine designs. The only thing I might toss out is to look at Toyota/Lexus. They seem to be one of the last manufacturers to bring "new trends" to market (as opposed to BMW/Audi/Mercedes immediately jumping on new technology). Honda/Acura has embraced turbocharged 4-bangers, where Toyota is still using V-6s.
