Have a hotel billing question for those who do a lot of travel

I stayed at a Marriott this weekend, that I had booked through an online retailer. They handled the transaction with Marriott. I gave the front desk a credit card for "incidentals" when I checked in. I just logged on to my bank's account, and noticed I have a pending $20 charge. I called the hotel, and they said that's "common practice" and it should drop off later this week.

I think that's the only time I've ever seen this practice. Is this a common practice for Marriott, or for any other hotels?
