I'm trying to post this in the right way, but do people die in rip currents


mostly because they panic? Obviously, people are different levels of swimmers, athletes, etc. but seems to me as an adult, if I got pulled way out and became too tired to get back, I would float on my back and wait for help with and be very careful to conserve engergy. Also, I know you're supposed to swim sideways along the shore line and not back. I'm sure I'm simplifying it but my guess is people work too hard thinking they need to save themselves, get exhausted, and PANIC, and don't make it.

What say you? I come at this mostly from the angle of trying to educate my children for our August beach trip to NC.
