Instant gratification generation, and here is a true example at our company
We still offer a pension. Fewer than 15% of private companies do. And for decades, it was a big deal to our job applicants. "You offer a pension, AND a 401(k) with match? Wow!" They would marvel over it.
Just in the last few years, we are getting younger applicants who will actually tell us that, instead of a pension, they want another week of vacation. They specifically cite that ... "I don't like your vacation policy, how can I get more?" It doesn't matter how well you describe the benefits of the pension, or that, once you are vested after 5 years, it's guaranteed (we're conservative and well funded). They want vacation NOW, because a pension in 30 years boggles their minds. These are *always* applicants under 35, maybe 32 or so. Almost everyone older than 35 still says, "Wow, you have a pension? That's great!"
