ACC Track & Field - Day 1 Update

All things considered, we had a good day. Here is the breakdown:

Men
1) Peter Seufer won the 10K even though he was not seeded (not really a surprise that he was near the top since he won last year but Syracuse loaded up in the event (they placed 5 in the top 7). This adds 10 points to our projected score. Meanwhile UVa did not score in the event even though they were projected to score 9 points.
2) Both our top decathlete, McKenzie Muldoon, and UVa's top guy are not competing. This subtracts 2 from our projected score and 8 from UVa.
3) Our top guy in the 110 HH is not competing. He was not a top 8 seed so he wasn't projected to score but I thought he had a chance to contribute based upon last year's results.
4) Our top guy in the javelin, who is the best in the ACC, is not competing for the second straight year after winning as a freshman. It would be nice if there was some information out there on our missing athletes. Since I wasn't sure of his status, I didn't include any points in my initial projection.
5) As expected, UVa's Jordan Young is in the field in the triple jump even though he hasn't competed in the event this year. He would have won last year if he didn't foul and has a good chance to win this year. I am adding 10 points to UVa's projected score.
6) For VT, Michael Davenport continued his disappointing season and did not qualify for the 200 finals. He scored in that event last year as well as in the 100. I wasn't projecting any points.
7) We qualified 3 runners for the 12-man 1500 final which is one more than projected while UVa qualified one as expected. We should pick up points in this event but no change as of now to the projected UVa edge of 5-4 in the event.
8) The pole vault is today and we are projected to finish 2-3-4-7 with UVa in fifth. This is the most important event in the meet for us and we need to be at or above our projected finishes.
9) The shot put is today and UVa has the guys ranked 2, 5 and 7. This is a key event for them to stay with us.
10) The steeplechase is the only running event final today and we are seeded for a 7th place finish while UVa is projected to finish 8th.
11) The updated projected totals is VT 80, UVa 74. The FSU is still a heavy favorite to win the title.

Women
1) Our hammer throwers (Thor and Kuklova) went 1-2 as opposed to the projected 2-4 for a gain of 5 points.
2) Freix grabbed a 4th in the 10K for another gain of 5 points. Meanwhile, UVa picked up 2 unexpected points in the event.
3) The pole vault results were a little disappointing since we were projected to go 1-4 and went 2-3 behind UVa's vaulter. They gain 2 points while we lose 1.
4) Blanden did not final in the 200 so we lose 1 point.
5) UVa picked up 2 points with an unexpected finish in the high jump.
6) We qualified 3 runners for the 1500 final (one more than projected) while UVa qualified 1 in the 400 hurdles (one less than projected).
7) The key event today is the long jump where UVa is expected to go 4-6-9 and we are seeded 8th. With 3 top competitors, this could be a make or break event for the Cavaliers.
8) The updated projection: VT 91, UVa 69. Miami is still the team to beat for the overall title.
