I think it is a matter of scaling up and realizing their appeal is limited

There are a large number of craft breweries and it seems to grow every day, there simply isn't the market for them all to become a Sam Adams sized operation or even an Anchor sized operation. Also, many of them make one or two good beers that in the past they may have been the only brweery making one of that quality. With increased competition in the craft market there are plenty of local breweries that will make similary good beers of that style. I think often times people like supporting the little guy who they can talk to over a larger company, which Deschutes, Ballast Point, Green Flash, and others are now becoming in the context of craft beer.
