What a team does in the regular season matters for seeding, and seeding by in large, does matter. Sure, UVA lost to UMBC, but by percentage, a 16 has far less chance to beat a 1. The best team is a team that brings it's A game when it matters most. The NCAA tournament matters most, and the tram that brings it's A game more times than the rest often wins it, if enough talent.
