Virginia Tech Offense Focused On The Basics With Kyron Drones Expected To Take A Step Forward

As Andy Bitter pointed out earlier this week, Virginia Tech ranks first in the country in returning production per the SP+ metrics. Much of that production is concentrated on the offensive side of the ball, with the only starter lost being Dae’Quan Wright and his 28 catches for 366 yards. But when you factor in the return of Ali Jennings, who was injured last year, that more than makes up for Wright’s departure.

With so much experience in the system, one might think that the Hokies will start spring practice with some more advanced stuff this year. They know who their quarterback is going to be, they know the type of offense they should run, and for the most part they know pretty much what their two-deep is going to look like. However, they aren’t going to put the cart before the horse, as head coach Brent Pry put it on the TSL Podcast on Monday.

“There’s been times in my career where we’ve gotten the cart before the horse, and tried to do too much, and it doesn’t work that way,” he said.

Certainly, Virginia Tech fans who go back far enough understand what he’s talking about. There were multiple times during the Bryan Stinespring era when the offensive coaching staff had to scale things back offensively in the middle of the season because they were trying to do too much, but that doesn’t seem like it’s going to be the case with this coaching staff.
