The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: Success Down The Stretch, And Bowl Possibilities

Pop Watson will get his shot in the spring, but for now, the backup reps belong to Grant Wells. (Ivan Morozov)

We’ll try a slightly different formula for this week’s First Bank & Trust Company Friday Q&A — slightly shorter answers with a couple of more questions.

1) Would you rather have had Pop Watson get reps over Grant Wells at the end of the Louisville game? – NokieHokie

Chris Coleman: No. Just a handful of snaps against a defense that may or may not be trying isn’t going to make much of a difference in his progression. With Wells back and able to play, if something were to happen to Drones, Wells would be the guy. Therefore, I’d prefer to use those snaps for Wells and give him a chance to get a little bit of sharpness back. He looked good on the pass that the tight end dropped. He went through his reads and processed things very quickly. If Drones was to get hurt, the passing game would look different, and I think it’s important to give any backup snaps that may be available to the guy who would actually be coming into the game if the starter got hurt.

Watson’s time to get quality reps will come in the spring. Now that he’s back to being the third option, he’s running the scout team, especially this week to simulate Thomas Castellanos at Boston College. If he’s running the other team’s offense, then he’d be less prepared to come into the game.
