Hokies Practice Report: Stroman A Spectator, Canteen Takes Safety Snaps, Pop Runs Scout-Team

If Jalen Stroman doesn’t play this weekend, could Hokies nickelback Derrick Canteen play a larger role at safety? (Ivan Morozov)

Hokies safety Jalen Stroman didn’t suit up during practice Wednesday, an inauspicious sign for his availability in the Hokies’ game Saturday at Boston College, where Virginia Tech could be playing musical chairs in the secondary again.

Stroman, who suffered an unspecified upper-body injury against Syracuse two weeks ago, played just 10 snaps against Louisville last week before shutting things down. He was on the field Wednesday, shadowing the safety group, but not in pads.

Head coach Brent Pry, who was unavailable to reporters after practice due to a Tech Talk Live taping, said earlier this week that Stroman was questionable for this weekend and didn’t sound optimistic about his availability.

Jaylen Jones worked with the ones in Stroman’s place. The junior’s gotten the lion’s share of snaps this season during the frequent injury and targeting absences of Stroman and Nasir Peoples, though he’s struggled to match their play.
