What went wrong for Mike Young and Virginia Tech in 2022-23? (Ivan Morozov)

In Part I of the offseason review for Virginia Tech basketball, I recapped the last four years of the program under Mike Young. What did Young do well when building up the Hokies’ program after taking over in 2019? What could’ve been better?

In Part II, I’ll recap the 2022-23 season and give a synopsis of where things went wrong and what bright spots can be building blocks moving forward. Part III will examine the 2023-24 roster and what to expect from the Hokies.

If you polled most Virginia Tech basketball fans asking what they felt the largest issues were for the 2022-23 team, they would say defense and rebounding, and from a large-scale view of the data, I would be inclined to agree. However, when digging into the data and figuring out “why” those two areas were a problem, we find that they aren’t as much of a concern going forward as they were an anomaly for this specific team.

Before going into defense and rebounding, let’s take a look at the data for the season as a whole as it compares to the season prior.
