Will Virginia Tech Soon Break Through In Ohio?

Last February, I wrote an article called “Virginia Tech Football Recruiting And Ohio” in which I opined that the state of Ohio would be a target for Hokie recruiting under Brent Pry, particularly with Joe Rudolph on the staff. Not a major target, to be sure, but I view it as a state where the Hokies have the opportunity to cherrypick a few good players every now and then.

Joe Rudolph recruited Ohio heavily when he was at Wisconsin, as he did in his prior stop at Pitt. He knows the landscape very well. Moreover, more than half of Ohio is within the 6-hour radius that coaches talk about so much. Here’s a visual…

The 6-hour radius for Virginia Tech extends as far away as Charleston, S.C. in the southeast. It’s extremely close to Atlanta and Nashville in the southwest and covers Harrisburg and Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania. Up north, it touches the shores of Lake Erie in Ohio. That’s a big swathe of territory available for the Hokies, though there is plenty of competition in the region.
