Virginia Tech Recruiting: New Prospects, and More Camps

Virginia Tech has extended some new scholarship offers recently, both to 2016 and 2017 prospects. There were also some players at camp over the weekend who earned offers, and a few others who the coaching staff will continue to monitor.

Chris Horne wrote an excellent update earlier in the week about those prospects who camped at Tech on Sunday. Today I want to address several different prospects, some of which I’ve seen in person.

2016 LB/DE Cheyton Pine, Williamsburg, Virginia

I haven’t seen Pine in person, but he recently got a scholarship offer from the Hokies. He also has offers from Notre Dame, Pitt, Georgia, UNC, NC State, WVU, UVA, and others. Virginia Tech is his childhood favorite, and I would favor the Hokies slightly over Notre Dame and perhaps Georgia at this point in time.

Pine has terrific acceleration. He can run and tackle in space, and he’s a hard hitter. While the Hokies lost LB target Tyrone Hopper to UNC this past week, Pine would be a completely acceptable replacement, if not even better.

I’m not 100% convinced that Pine is a natural linebacker, as he lines up at defensive end quite a bit. However, he is being targeted as a backer
