After a summer of being relatively quiet in terms of naming favorites, Hermitage (Richmond, VA) defensive end Jeffrey Fitzgerald finally has some news on the recruiting front.
“I have narrowed down my list,” Fitzgerald said. “It’s down to 3…UVa, Virginia Tech and Maryland.”
Fitzgerald, who says all 3 schools are “pretty much even” right now, believes he will have a decision before the start of his senior season. Hermitage opens the 2004 schedule on September 10th, when they play Lee-Davis.
“I’m going to try to get it done before the season,” Fitzgerald said. “I don’t need to take any official visits.”
Earlier this summer, Fitzgerald attended summer camps for all 3 favorites. He also attended Tech’s Spring game earlier this year and has been to UVa on several other occasions, including summer camps in previous years.
Comfort level is the primary reason these 3 schools have made the final list.
“Basically, it’s the same with all 3,” Fitzgerald said. “I feel comfortable around the coaches and the players. All of them have good environments.”
So how will he choose among the 3?
“It’s really going to be wherever I feel the most comfortable,” Fitzgerald said. “I can’t go wrong with any of them really. Wherever I feel comfortable. My family might have a little bit of an influence too.”
Hermitage quarterback Jameel Sewell committed to Virginia earlier this year, but Fitzgerald says that will not play a part in his decision.
“He jokes here or there about me coming there, but nothing serious,” Fitzgerald said. “[Jameel’s decision] won’t have an impact on me.”
Fitzgerald is rated the #6 overall prospect in the state by TheSabre.com and Techsideline.com. He boasts around 14 scholarship offers.
