Duke has been to the 4 Final 4 times before Coach K started head coaching

at the school. A history of success within the Duke program was there but Coach K did move the needle into the upper elite. For Williams to do that Tech would be an even greater accomplishment. While I think Williams has been the best basketball coach Tech has had maybe slightly better than Bill Foster, who did not have the recruiting allure of ACC membership, I feel we need to wait a couple more years to make a statement like in your post. For one thing he is to mercurial and am not sure if he can maintain his on court persona over the long haul, which is an elixir that motivates his teams to play above their heads. Second, I feel this season has yet to play out and despite the euphoria of the wins against a below average UNC and exceptional victory against UVA, that we could have easily lost and got a bit lucky at the end, Tech has underachieved this season, based on the talent level.

It took Tech 2/3s of a season to discover defense is necessary to win against good teams. Williams is also paid very well in comparison to other ACC coaches. I would say on caliber to a be Final 4 coach, so I hope to see that level of success in the next 3 to 4 years. I still do not see a dominant front line and there is an absence of elite mental toughness. The Duke game last Wednesday showed there is still a significant gap.

I like Williams but am not quiet ready to drink any koolaid.
