Future of the QB position

Taking some time to separate from the emotion of the loss to OSU and looking back at the games of the season on video I believe that Josh Jackson has a limited ability to consistently make the intermediate and long throws to really open up Coach Fuente's offense. Jackson was good at limiting mistakes but held onto the ball too long at times and was late making throws at other times. He is a freshman with mostly freshman receivers so that can get better. My worry is his physical ability to make the throws and more importantly having the ability to be a playmaker. He will have to show in spring practice that he can make the jump physically in making the throws and in becoming a playmaker. If we are going to compete with the likes of Clemson and Florida State we absolutely must have dynamic quarterback play. Michael Vick, Tyrod Taylor and Bryan Randall all developed into playmakers in spite of a pretty plain offensive scheme and they all by themselves made our offense better. I believe that Coach Fuente has a very effective and dynamic offensive mindset but without a playmaker at the QB position-well we saw what happened at critical times this year. The good news is that in spite of young players, multiple injuries and no single dynamic playmaker (you could argue maybe Cam Phillips) we went 9-4. Not bad in the ACC but we if we are going to consistently compete for the ACC championship the next step has to start with a playmaker at QB. Can Josh Jackson be that player- call me skeptical. I do know that the one person I trust to judge who will start out of a pretty good stable of QB's now that early signing day has past is Coach Fuente. He has a very tough job ahead to pick a starter for next year. I hope in spring practice that Savoy, Kumah, Patterson, Grimsley, Murphy or one our more of the new freshman WR's really makes a mark and shows that they can make the catches. I hope all of the QB's get close looks and that our offense shows greater playmaking ability. You can blame some of the issues this year on Cornelson but missed throws and catches and bad decision making is a playmaking issue. I think that our offensive philosophy is right, the coaching staff is extremely capable and Fuente has identified and recruited very good players so the future is bright. The big jump I will look for us to make is to start making plays consistently in big games and winning these games against ranked opponents where we are the underdog. Then and only then will we be able to consider ourselves approaching the level of Clemson and Florida State in the ACC.
